  • CHRIS PIAZZA TO LAUNCH MONUMENTAL NEW WORK AT ARTWALK08

    + Saturday & Sunday, June 7 - 8, 1pm - 6pm

+ Downtown Atlantic, 364 Atlantic Avenue

ArtWalk08 brings art into the public realm, making it accessible to all through a tour of open studios, gallery shows, public art projects, and special events. Continuing to build Atlantic Nomadic, presenting compelling artists projects in a public forum, ArtWalk08 will premiere the yearlong production of Saint Peter - The Thirteenth Apostle, a new work by Chris Piazza.

Ms. Piazza, a resident of Boerum Hill, is known for her large sculptures of figures inside elaborate display boxes. The figure of Saint Peter, which will stand inside a 20 ft. tall tower of seashells and "Pique-assiette," broken dish mosaic, is scheduled for exhibition in 2009 at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, in Manhattan. It's exhibition will be during The Cathedral's year long rededication celebrations after a fire in 2001 led to a major restoration.

    Cris Piazza

Ms. Piazza sees Saint Peter as a way to connect her Brooklyn neighborhood with the spirit of The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, which has traditionally embraced New York City's many cultures and histories. To that end, During ArtWalk08, Ms. Piazza is inviting neighborhood residents to contribute their dishes to the production of this work of art. She's asking for those dishes that may have personal significance to the giver or their family - preferably those dishes that have already been broken. As she explains, "I'm looking for dishes that have unfortunately broken but are difficult to part with because of the sentiment connected to them. My hope is that the people who donate these dishes will be able to find that little bit of themselves somewhere up there on that 20 ft. tower and be reminded of their contribution to this work and also, symbolically through this humble material, to the broader fabric of the history and community which is all of our collective NYC."

Visitors to ArtWalk will be invited to participate by donating dishes, which will become part of an ornate, elaborate mosaic case to the large sculpture. In addition to dishes from Brooklyn neighborhoods, Piazza will collect "letters to Saint Peter" from visitors which will further be built into the chambers of this sculpture to serve as a time capsule, where the history of dish and owner can be connected to the piece for as long as it stands. The subsequent creation of this new work will, which will soar over 19' will be filmed in 2008. ArtWalk 2009 will debut this documentary and the unveiling of the completed Saint Peter sculptural work.

    Cris Piazza

This is a chance for ArtWalk audiences to be part of the making of this monumental work and to participate in Brooklyn's art scene in a unique and unconventional way.

Chris Piazza's work has been described in the New York Times as "artwork that memorialized both her cultural heros and the vanishing parts of New York." Her work is connected by themes of multiple reference, antique materials and found objects, imbued with the passage of time. Piazza currently lives and works in Boerum Hill in a 19th century carriage house, which she personally restored. For more information: NY Times or www.cpiazza.com

  • Kim Holleman: Mobile Public Artwork Trailer Park

    + Saturday & Sunday, June 7 - 8, 1pm

    + Public Art Project

Trailer Park is a portable, natural, public park housed inside an 18' x 8' x 7'' mobile Coachman Travel Trailer. The interior is fully planted, designed, and treated as a "real" park. Hand-laid brick planter beds containing lush shrubs, trees, and plants are complimented by masonry laid in the same tradition as public parks. Ivy climbs the walls where a self-contained stone wall-fountain provides more area for plant growth and moisture.

Concrete and wooden benches invite visitors to rest and enjoy the park view. Skylights provide rays of sunlight beaming in, kissing the interior.

Trailer Park is a site of paradox. It is nonfunctional, yet completely functional in its re-purpose.

All visitors to the Trailer Park can walk inside to go for a stroll in the park. A mobile metaphor, and a transcendent experience, Trailer Park cautiously asks where we will go when there is no more nature.

Village Voice describes Holleman's solo show "Law of the Land" currently on view at Black & White Gallery in Williamsburg through May 25 as a "dynamic of the immense and the small, of ruin and regeneration... the uniqueness—and importance—of Holleman's eco-aesthetics reside in her imaginative attempts to reconcile this awkward relationship."

  • MARTIN SOBEY: Site Specific Art Installation on Atlantic Avenue

    + Saturday & Sunday, June 7 – 8, 1pm – 6pm

    + Public Art Project

Artists Statement: I install abstract photography on just about everything, including poles, ventilation ducts, sidewalks, streets and high traffic pedestrian zones. Placement is critical, as I find very specific locations for differing types of installations.

I experiment with shape and color, taking into consideration aesthetics, semiotics and potential for both manmade and natural elements to breakdown the various materials I use photographic prints and tape.

I then retrieve the impermanent pieces after some time, if they still exist. What was once new and beautiful has become ragged and beat, and sometimes is just plain detritus. All the while I watch people and their reactions, if any, and document the varying scenarios.

Martin Sobey Martin Sobey ArtWalk is pleased to have artist Martin Sobey present this work to the public this year. These captivating works will be installed en route during the event for visitors, traffic, and the elements alike to interact with and affect the works over time.

  • "Twilight Becomes Night" by director, Virginie-Alvine Perrette Followed by discussion with the filmmaker

    + Film Screening: Sunday, June 8th, 5pm

+ Belarusan Church, 401 Atlantic Avenue

ArtWalk is pleased to present this moving film which centers on neighborhood preservation. Atlantic Avenue is one of the great streets of New York City, home to people of various cultural backgrounds, vibrant and successful businesses, long standing institutions, and rich architectural character.

Twilight Becomes Night examines the pivotal role of neighborhood stores in our individual lives, our communities, and in our society as a whole.

Twilight Becomes Night is an intimate and emotional portrait documenting the life of small businesses today surviving amidst myriad issues that threaten neighborhood stores - the large chains, high rents, and public policy, among others.

Using the streets and shops of New York City as a backdrop, the film moves beyond nostalgic regret to reveal a high-stakes transformation and its potential to affect us all. In the end, the film is a powerful reminder of individual commitment and community activism in preserving local business.

ArtWalk works to support this vibrant community as well as the artists and merchants that live and work in Brooklyn. In turn, the Avenue has nurtured this event - providing the canvas for this public tour of studios and each small businesses offering their space to the local artists.

+ Belarusan Church, 401 Atlantic Avenue

THE POETIC BODY: Visceral Interplay Between Words and Movement Free Workshop Facilitated by Rebekah Windmiller, Director, nycExpressive Arts Studio.

Discover rich and meaningful language that poetically expresses exactly who you are and develop new and surprising moves that communicate without words.

We articulate ourselves through our bodies and words everyday. When we pay closer attention to gesture and voice, we can take movement and language from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

The moving body together with the speaking voice create a new poetry of the body, a powerful integration of word, movement and exquisite expression. Discover your exquisite potential through this unique workshop: The Poetic Body.

THE POETIC BODY THE POETIC BODY

This workshop is open to all regardless of experience in the arts. The environment is built around trust, going at your own pace and slowly taking risks in ways that feel right to you. There is never any pressure to be anyone other than who you already are!

Artlog.com is a social web application designed to connect people through art & design. Launched just this year by Manish Vora and Dylan Fareed in Brooklyn, Artlog is a vibrant art community that combines venue/event listings, online and offline social networking and professional tools for artists and galleries.

For the Atlantic Avenue Artwalk, Artlog is opening it's Boerum Hill studio space to exhibit selected users' artworks. As part of an open-call run through the site, many New York City artists submitted their work for consideration. Artlog & curators selected 8 artists working in diverse media -- photography, sculpture, painting and drawing. Mostly living and working in Brooklyn, these emerging artists include Elizabeth Daggar, Carlo Grassini, Thomas Haddad, Daniel Kelly, Galina Kurlat, Mari Oshima and Christopher Rose. The work will be on exhibition throughout the weekend.
